Visa and Startups Work to Define the Future of Payments

As part of its strategy to promote its position on innovation, Visa led a panel of experts to discuss the impact of new payments technologies in creating a seamless experience. In alignment with the company´s approach to open collaboration, the session took place at the , a co-working space located in the vibrant Wynwood Arts District, where early-stage startups and forward-thinking entrepreneurs gather to work on their ideas and creations.

Moderated by Allen Cueli, Senior Director of Product and New Payment Enablers; panelists Serge Elkiner, CEO of Yellow Pepper, a leading fintech in the mobile payments space; Lindsay Lehr, Senior Director at Americas Market Intelligence, a leading market research company in the payment industry, and Fernando Mendez, VP of Products for Visa LAC, shared their insights on payments. Allen led the panel on a discussion of mobile, e-commerce, cybersecurity, Internet of Things, reaching the unbanked and collaboration with fintechs.

Serge talked about the growing relevance of Latin American based startups, highlighting that the possibility of integrating Visa’s payments capabilities enables them to generate winning solutions. “We see more and more local developers of apps in Latin America, and thanks to Visa’s APIs they can connect to the rest of the payments ecosystem,” he said.

Acknowledging the perception among Latin American consumers that online and mobile commerce are more susceptible to fraud, Fernando Mendez spoke about Visa’s risk-based authentication and the security levels it provides to online commerce. He also explained how Visa Token Services work and clarified several common misperceptions about this platform.

When asked to share their advice for startups that need to integrate a payment capability in their solution, Elkiner said that he would tell them to focus on their core strength and work with the experts in payments to develop the payment component of their solution. “My recommendation would be to understand how the consumer in a specific country likes to buy and ensure that your payment solution respects those preferences,” added Linsday. The panel was part of a series of Rendezvous, smaller events organized by eMerge Americas, the Miami based tech & startup two-day conference that Visa is supporting as part of its commitment to work with startups in the region.

Later this year, SVP of Strategy for LAC Romina Seltzer will join other women in tech for a Rendezvous panel at the Miami Facebook office, to discuss how female leadership is having an impact in the industry. Additionally, Luz Adriana Ramirez, Country Manager of Visa Mexico, will join a panel discussion at eMerge Americas on Women, Innovation and Technology.
